Soc 370 where are we?! 11-18-2013 #10

I though of the image at the top just to get a idea of the number of people in the world and then what that meant for different things. So then I went through listing the good and bad things about a higher population for the glob. Then we talked about brain gain and brain drain. I have to say that this theory upset me. Not that I do not understand what it is going or trying to say but my problem with is that we should not in my opinion base the population and the migration in it on what we gain or loss. To me that would mean that we judge a immigration what we think that would do for us before we let them in other wise it is a brain drain. It makes me upset that at times people think that by going to other countries and helping people and trying to teach them the western ways that it will make there life better. If you have never seen the videos called “cannibal tours” it would be really helpful for you to take a look at it on YouTube. I know for myself that I have to learn that not everyone can live like me or others that I know it would just not work for the world and the resources that the world has left. So when we go to other places in the world we have to keep in mind that there are other ways to live and to carry out ones life. “There is nothing so strange, in a strange land, as the stranger who comes to visit it.” (Dennis O'Rourke). So my kinda ending question here is does anyone have any idea of how we should go about accepting other cultures and trying to value them and they are and not help them change into a more western culture kinda state?

  1. Based on what you have said I think you would really enjoy an anthropology class. 'Non-Western' culture appreciation, in my opinion does take place. Some people like to study cultures that are dissimilar to their own and try to better understand them. I believe that I would qualify as one of those people. Unique and different cultures fascinate me, especially their rituals and religions. I found this the other day surfing the web, you might like it. http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/cultures/news-beautiful-women-world?image=15

  2. I feel as though this post was very informative. I appreciate that you understand that you should keep your mind open when interacting with others, because I feel as though that is one down fall of the western culture. I also Love the pictures above they are really cool and easy to comprehend. Good Job.
