SOC 370 #12 Ecuadorian Tribe VS Oil Company 12-2-2013

I thought of this cases when I thought of the environmental worksheet that we had to do for class. I really interest me that we all feel that we care a lot. I wanted to then bring a large issue to your attention. The Yasuni National Park is in danger and everyday millions of people stand by and watch it go and do not do anything. I believe that each one of us knows that we have a right to do the right thing. We talked about human rights in class yet to me I feel that human rights are not all the same. I feel that at times we push what we think is right on to others without thinking if it is right for them and if they want it. I have to say that I have been asking myself if right is the right word to use.
I think they do have a right but I feel it is too easy for people to say that are not then they have a right to that and its not something they want. They should have the choice to the right I feel is better. At a point I think we have to see what we see as a basic need and a right is not always the same to people. There are many people in the world leaving with less than we do yet we see it as a right for them to have it even if they are happy with the way they are right now. I think in the case of the Yasuni National Park we have to be careful with the people that this is affecting and we are trying to help. What we think is right for them is not what they want and that is giving them a bad view of us and the way view the world.

Blog soc 370 #11 11-25-13 Wanting to help...

I was really interested this week on the different way people view things. I mean even though day to day events people hold different views about the most common and at times simple idea that one might hold. I was really interested by this and the video we watched in class. So it is really cool how a lot of different political and economical things play into each other. I really makes me wonder about all the things I have done and though I was doing one thing when it was really going towards a goal I did not even know about or maybe did not even want to help. It upsets me that a lot of the programs or organizations that I like could also be doing the same thing. I guess I feel like a little kid when they find out something they thought was fake. It just kinda hurts your view of things for a bit until you find out how to act and fix what you did not like about it. So I used the image of a ink blot to get the idea across that we all see things differently but then after we but them tougher we start to see a larger image take shape that we might of not had any idea was forming. I think of me I see it that if race has some how taken off the world and we never had the idea of it that it would then fix a lot of the problems we see today. I mean race is a word and idea that was made by people so people should be able to get ride of it right.

Soc 370 where are we?! 11-18-2013 #10

I though of the image at the top just to get a idea of the number of people in the world and then what that meant for different things. So then I went through listing the good and bad things about a higher population for the glob. Then we talked about brain gain and brain drain. I have to say that this theory upset me. Not that I do not understand what it is going or trying to say but my problem with is that we should not in my opinion base the population and the migration in it on what we gain or loss. To me that would mean that we judge a immigration what we think that would do for us before we let them in other wise it is a brain drain. It makes me upset that at times people think that by going to other countries and helping people and trying to teach them the western ways that it will make there life better. If you have never seen the videos called “cannibal tours” it would be really helpful for you to take a look at it on YouTube. I know for myself that I have to learn that not everyone can live like me or others that I know it would just not work for the world and the resources that the world has left. So when we go to other places in the world we have to keep in mind that there are other ways to live and to carry out ones life. “There is nothing so strange, in a strange land, as the stranger who comes to visit it.” (Dennis O'Rourke). So my kinda ending question here is does anyone have any idea of how we should go about accepting other cultures and trying to value them and they are and not help them change into a more western culture kinda state?

Sum blog #9 soc 370 I'm not a kid anymore

I think at some point in life we have all said that to someone that is trying to dull down something so that they think we would understand them. We all like to think that we are bright and we know a lot about the world and how things work. But what if I told you day in and day out things are played down so that the general public can understand it. Take a look at how computers keep track of the websites that you go to so that you have less work to do next time you plan to go to that website. It has come more and more to peoples notice that more and more people want things right now. They are not willing to wait and see if they really needed or do the work to get it. They just plan want it because it is there.  I sued the image of Ender's game for the fact the story line reminded me of the theory. "Ender's Game(1985) is a military science fiction novel by American author Orson Scott Card. Set in Earth's future, the novel presents an imperiled mankind after two conflicts with the "Bugguers", an insecticide alien species  In preparation for an anticipated third invasion, children, including the novel's protagonist, Ender Wiggin, are trained at a very young age through increasingly difficult games including some in zero gravity, where Ender's statistical genius is revealed."(Wikipedia). I though Ender's game fit really will for the fact that the theory in the book is that kids play use new games that there minds process things faster and as such they can learn more faster. They also have less of a emotional attachment to things from the interpersonal connections for technology.
I do not think technology is all bad or good. I think it depends on who is using it and how it is being used. I do wish that more people would use it for good and I know it looks that way. We don't see the bad for the fact that it is hidden from us. That all the things we do is keeped on record and for what reason I have to ask. I wish I could know what it was for so that it did not seem so bad. Maybe I am a bit to positive and think that things are more good than bad. I though Ender's game was also a good thing for this its a mix of good and bad and it all depends on how you take the story. If you have not read the book I highly recommend it.

Soc 350 #8 Mask 11/4/2013

So I thought of the song "Everybodys fool" by Eversense this song for the fact of the one line of lyrics that say " Without the mask where will you hide Can't find yourself lost in your lie" To me this makes me think of the fact that even though I like anatomice at points and some of the things they did to me they are still in themselves what they hate the most. I do not like the for them it was the fact that other people would say what could and could not be seen and put on the internet and that they would stock and harass people. They said that they did not like this about the Scientology  My problem was this if that is the case where they themselves not doing this also. Where they not going after people in the begging for not liking what they did or who they were. So they are the not any better than the ones that they went after and tried to fight against. I think to me at least at the end of the film that it started to turn out that they where helping people rather they just going after people to show they they could or didn't like what they were doing.
For me I like to say that it is not right to just go after people just so that you can feel that you want to teach them something. I feel that everyone does wrong even if they believe it to be right. For me I find it best to be explained by the fallowing quotes.

“Red like blood

White like bone
Red like solitude
White like silence
Red like the beastly instinct
White like a god's heart
Red like thawing hatred
White like a frozen, pained cry
Red like the night's hungry shadows
Like a sigh piercing the moon
it shines white and shatters red”
-Tite Kubo-

“the constant shower of the sun's mane

erases the footprints on thin ice
do not fear deception for the world lies atop deception"

Soc 370 #7 sam old same old = too much pressure 10-28-2013

Classroom at Carthage College

So we all can be asked to imagine a classroom and even though we all view different things  they would still be really similar. Is sitting in the same style of room that looks so much like every other room a bad thing? If the class room was more informal and express full would we do better in class and in the workforce  I went to Carthage college for a year and one thing I really miss a lot is the class rooms. There where the typical class rooms but also glass window rooms. When the college would give campus tours they would tell us at he glass rooms to make faces and be distracting. The students in that room where learning a important lesson to be focused  I also find it really interesting we all learn the same things basic of things. Written, history, math, science   and so forth. I feel that that is a good thing for all students to learn basics that make them connected in their ideas and what they understand. It also puts a bit more pressure on me as a student to learn other things other people and students might not know to get ahead. So just for fun a few things I have learned that make me stand out. I have learned how to crack cried card codes. Before you jump to ideas it's not to brake into accounts or anything like that. What it really is a mathematical formula to use to see if a card is fake or real. The history behind it is interesting as well. I have also learned that the body can be drained of all blood in 8.6 seconds giving the right vacuuming system. I have learned how to socialize animals that have been abused and neglected. So after learning all odd facts and skill that interest me and I feel set me apart from other that already know all I know. Is it a good think I feel like all students feel like this that all other students in there know the same stuff and then feel the need to make themselves have sow thing to catch people's attention? So even though I think globalization is good could it be pushing students to have more pressure to make themselves stand out.

Soc 370 #6 Why does it cost that much? 10-21-2013

So in class this week we have been talking about the economy and a capitalist sytel society. So I thought of this as a example for when one group pushes another group to be like them thinking it will make them better when in fact it has a mixed of good and bad. The video I picked show the cost of groceries in a store in Nunavut Canada. To me this video at first is funny to think that something like ice cream would cost $13.69 so to only see the cost here about $5.00 for it. It is really odd to think that it would ever cost that much. That got me thinking then as to why it would cost that much. This is what I came up with. A national world wide crises could make this up in price if the commodity is not being made anymore or the products used to make it are no longer available. It would also go up in cost the harder it was to store and transport.
That is where the high cost comes from. Nunavut is the farthest-north part of Canada. It is cold and remote. Most families make do with what they can hunt. But this is not getting them by as well with now living in towns with stories and new commodities. They are protesting to the government to help with the problem.  To think I am one college student eating and complaining about the cost that I spend on food just for myself when "Meanwhile, a family of four on social assistance in Nunavut would get about $275 to $325 a week for food."(http://worldtruth.tv/nunavut-canada-insane-food-prices/). It really makes me wonder if capitalism and the economy is really the best thing for us to use. It makes me want to change the system to fix and work better for everyone but I do not know how to do that.

SOC 370 #5 10-14-2013 Modernization

It was really interesting to learn modernization about but, I was a bit upset that it is modeled by the west. I do not think that having the west looked at as such a high standing place is a good thing. Don't get me wrong. I just think the idea that where the west or even Americans goes to our heads at times. Look at Neo colonialism with America and Okinawa and the army base. I do not believe that it is the best thing I don't want other nations to want to grow into that. Americans I think would like to believe it is a one way and it uses other countries but in reality it's a two way. America needs the other nations to be different from them. America could never stand to try and deal with another America.
I would really like to see all nations be able to have a sense of self worth. That all nations could be together and have a connection but still respect each others traditions and way of doing things.  I believe all nations are working towards what they believe to be the perfect nation but I think we can't push other nations or say they are behind when everyone sees a perfect nation as something different.
I picked the photo above not that I fully agree with the image. I do agree with the idea though that America was strong and had a set goal for what they wanted. Now though we have had this goal and we do not feel that strong about other things we do. We just go in with what we think other nations should do and think we help when we do not really have a passion into helping for it as much as we should. I would really like to see that passion come back for people to what the best for other people. Even if that means not helping at all other then giving support.

soc 370 (sumblog McWorld 10-00-2013 #4)

To talk about the idea of McWorld was really interesting. It makes me think of how much we need each other. But with that how easy it is to get info on other nations. With that thought this of the AAA rules came to mind.
It is like a twist of good and bad. With knowing this info on other nations its good so that people can be hurt less through knowing more info. But on the other hand it's not very good to know all that info. For the fact that you make it easier to know the weak spots and where to hit to hurt them most.

This made me think of a TV show called 'Firefly'.

"The show explores the lives of a group of people who fought on the losing side of a civil war and others who now make a living on the outskirts of society, as part of the the pioneer culture that exists on the fringes of their star system. In this future, the only two surviving superpowers, the United States and China, fused to form the central federal government, called the Alliance, resulting in the fusion of the two cultures. According to Whedon's vision, "nothing will change in the future: technology will advance, but we will still have the same political, moral, and ethical problems as today" (Wikipedia)

This show makes me think of of Jihad that feel to McWorld. That the two ideas fight with each other in the show throughout the one season and the movie. Maybe fundamentalists could be sometimes that the show 'Firefly'  has as its main part to show the class between all the sides.
To me this made my mind think of how to be aware of my actions  it's good to feed one's own desires and needs but too much feeding and it's hunger grows. When you run out of food to feed it. For the fact it's never learned to struggle how to pace itself with its basic needs for the fact it's never had too. The. Your desires and needs will turn on you and eat you. We all want to be strong and free like a wolf but if its not trained and obedient it will eat its owner.

Soc 370 (sumblog Study of Globalization and black cats 10-1-2013 #3)

Have you ever just wondered what things me, How you're connected to so many people, What more is out there, Well I have in a sense though about those kinda questions. So what does this have to do with globalization you might ask well it just I found it really interesting that even though we have been so connected through the Internet today yet there are so few studies in globalization. Also that global surveys are so far and few between. Something that I find really interesting and think it should be looked at more is just like starting to be explored. At the same time it makes me a bit happy. It gives me hope that maybe I would explore this topic more. That I could have that opportunity to give it a shoot. I really like to look at the connection between humans and animals. To do a study on that globally and travel and see the different ideas would be really cool to me.
I would like if I could to do a study on black cats and their connection to society. Most Western and European nations believe black cats to be bad luck. Where other smaller nations believe black cats to be good luck. It would be interesting to me to ask people why they think this is. I have a theory of my own on the topic that I would like to expand and explore more. Now that we can explore more and expand we should. It is such a interesting thing to look not just at your own views but everyone’s views in the world on a topic.I know it is a lot of work of how to gather the information and then how to find out what to ask. Its a challenge to make sure that your question is clear and can cover everyone in the world so that no ones answer is left out. Then it is even harder to make the question mean that seam thing to you as it does to the world. It not like you can be there to explain it to everyone. It also takes a while to get enough date for everyone and then put it into a form so that not only you but anyone can read it and understand it.

SOC 370 global idea (Sumblog 9-23-2013 -2)

Morse for me was interesting to read.I liked that he gave a view into both side of things. For me that is really important to see both sides of a idea. Oddly enough it helps me to understand the idea better. So I took a lot of time or as much as my mind could really put together and came out with what I though globalization and the effects it has and the world will do. I got the following.
I think globalization and the effects of it will play out as follows. First it will go into Homogenizing till it becomes very apparent to all and then go to reinforcing Heterogeneity. As in people and nations want their own culture but, they also want to have an understanding of other cultures.
My feelings on this topic vary. I feel that it is a good things that we learn more about each other's culture's and we learn about them. That we can be connected in that way. That we can be connected with each other on an everyday basis.  On the other hand it's not very good the larger superpowers  have more influence over the smaller ones that start to be pulled in all different ways. One way is trying to stay up to today with the world. Another part is trying to hold back to keep their values and ideas from being influenced so much with todays views that they fear would be lost and forgotten. Then right and left are being pulled on what they should look for opinion as what to do.
I think globalization depends on all nations and the people in them. To me it makes me think of the PC game Civ 5. It makes me think  of the game in the sense that you have your own nation and you pick where it goes and what it does. The neat thing about the game is that you have a tech tree and to get one technology you have to learn all the skills up to it. It lets you pick the policies you want your nation to follow. It like any normal civilization game with it will let you make war and explore the world and it will let you buy land to expand your nation. But the rare thing it does  it has you make treaties with the computers or friends you play with. It also has more than one way that you can win the game. You can win by taking over all the other nations and having them under your control or you can win by my favorite way and have the nation with the most powerful  cultural influence.
I do not think I can say one way or another if globalization is a good or bad thing. I know that I want to believe that it is good. That it will connect the nations and all parts of the world in a way that has yet to be reached. That each nation will  be recognized and named all over the world. Where the world is more connected with deeper social connections and not just little messages here and there. But I believe what I want globalization to be and what it is are to  mirrored images of itself. I do not see it taking place in my lifetime that globalization will turn itself to that mirror and see that it has to change itself. If it does take place I would be more than interested and happy to watch and maybe even play a part in helping it reach that point.

soc 370 Shoes (Sumblog 9-16-2013)

I was really interested in the shoes worksheet we did. For me it kinda upset me and the view I have of myself. I would really like to think of myself as a very global and well rounded person that knows a lot about the world. Yet, I have very little understanding of the smaller parts of it and how they help me live my everyday life. That most of the things that I use everyday that I take for granted I have no idea how they are made or where they come from. Most times I feel that I forget to be thankful that I even have them. I mean what if a world disaster takes place and the merchandise that I use from where was hit I can no longer get. What if no one can get it and the global ties that string the world together  start to come undone. Most of use do not see them we would never really notice what was taking place tell it was too late to do anything. I know that I would not notice in time. I would be like 'oh I am really upset that corn cost' so much but I don't think it really hits me how much that affects not only me but also people around the world that I never seem to think would use it.It was odd to see how diffrent we all see things in calss about globaly connections. For me it is really interesting to see how everyone sees things in a different way but we come to agree on a view that has both views in it partly. The view I posted with my post from youtube is called "Is your red the same as my red?" It really made me think of how we all view globalization and even though a lot of the ideas overlap a lot of them are different but we use them all together to form a big picture.
